Reflections on success at Writer Unboxed!

I’ve been guilty of forgetting to link to my Writer Unboxed posts here for a while, but I’m trying to turn over a new leaf! My February post is about writerly success and how we each need to define it for ourselves—because comparing yourself to others isn’t the way to go.

It’s a quote often cited when talking about how to manage your career as an author, but it’s worth saying one more time here: Comparison is the thief of joy.

THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND cover revealed!

Are you ready to see the absolutely gorgeous cover of THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND, my upcoming historical novel inspired by the outrageous Gilded Age railroad heiress Aimee Crocker? Here she is:

Sourcebooks knocked it out of the park yet again! I love everything about it — the image, the colors, the font — and I’m particularly tickled by the pearls, as they were Aimee’s favorite gem. She claimed in her memoir that she had the power to restore lost luster to pearls merely by touching them. Then again, she claimed A LOT of things. Can’t wait to share them with you, both the ones that made it into the book and the ones that didn’t.

So the book itself won’t hit shelves until August 2024, but while you’re waiting, here are some things you can do:

Pre-order from Bookshop!

Add it to your “want to read” shelf on Goodreads!

If you’re a historical fiction fan who’s been wondering when I was going to get back to writing about kick-ass women of the past and the amazing things they did, wonder no more. THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND is slated to come out from Sourcebooks in August 2024.

I’ll be sharing the cover and lots of delightful historical tidbits soon!

ARCA launching at Wellesley Books on March 7!

ARCA is soooooo close to here! It comes out on Tuesday, March 7, and I can’t wait to have the next installment of the Five Queendoms saga out in the world.

If you’re in the Boston area, I’d love to see you at Wellesley Books on Tuesday, where I’ll be in conversation with Amanda Foody and C.L. Herman, authors of All of Us Villains. March 7 at 7pm, easy to remember.

Tickets are required to attend, so please get yours here!

had a blast on Worldbuilding for Masochists!

Have you been listening to Worldbuilding for Masochists? What a fab podcast. Thrilled to be an invited guest, especially when the topic is near and dear to my heart. I had a great time recording this episode, talking about how gender intersects with other world building concerns. Because a god complex is a terrible thing to waste!

Give it a listen here.

ARCA buzz in Paste Magazine!

Ooh, here’s another fun one! Paste Magazine did a roundup of the most anticipated fantasy books coming in 2023, and guess who’s there? ARCA, by yours truly!

Couldn’t agree with this more:

“Too many people slept on Scorpica, the first installment in G.R. McAllister’s sweeping Five Queendoms series, an epic tale about a matriarchal society in which a decade passes without a single daughter being born. Time to fix your life with sequel Arca, which deals with the political fallout, as multiple powerful women scheme and maneuver against each other.”

Check out the whole list here.
