THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND cover revealed!

Are you ready to see the absolutely gorgeous cover of THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND, my upcoming historical novel inspired by the outrageous Gilded Age railroad heiress Aimee Crocker? Here she is:

Sourcebooks knocked it out of the park yet again! I love everything about it — the image, the colors, the font — and I’m particularly tickled by the pearls, as they were Aimee’s favorite gem. She claimed in her memoir that she had the power to restore lost luster to pearls merely by touching them. Then again, she claimed A LOT of things. Can’t wait to share them with you, both the ones that made it into the book and the ones that didn’t.

So the book itself won’t hit shelves until August 2024, but while you’re waiting, here are some things you can do:

THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND announced on Publishers Marketplace!

I am beyond excited to share with you that my next book was just announced — yay!

If you’re a historical fiction fan who’s been wondering when I was going to get back to writing about kick-ass women of the past and the amazing things they did, wonder no more. THE THIRTEENTH HUSBAND is slated to come out from Sourcebooks in August 2024.

I’ll be sharing the cover and lots of delightful historical tidbits soon!

The Arctic Fury deeply discounted in December!

Yes, I do tend to focus on my new releases around here, but of course, all my other books are also out there in the world! I’m particularly tickled that right around this time of year, when chilly weather descends, The Arctic Fury sees a big spike in readership. (In particular, it looks great against the backdrop of newly fallen snow on Instagram!)

So this is particularly well-timed news: The Arctic Fury is deeply discounted in e-book form during the month of December, and as of this writing, you can pick it up for less than $3 on several fave e-book platforms.

online events this week!

Suddenly, a flurry of events! I’m appearing online twice this week, and really excited about both.

First, I’m returning to Reddit for another AMA! I’ll be at r/Fantasy at 1pm on Monday, June 6, to talk about all things SCORPICA. Matriarchy! Fantasy! Queens dueling to the death! Why my female sorcerers are never called sorceresses! That kind of thing.

Then, on Tuesday, June 7, I’m on a panel with a bunch of fabulous ladies for the Edmonton Public Library, talking about women-centered stories (particularly historical fiction, but I’ll answer questions about fantasy too if you ask them.) You can register for that one here.

So catch me online if you can! And next week, I’ll actually be in person… see the Events page for details.

SCORPICA on Kate Quinn's list of recommendations at BookBub!

If you’ve read the blurbs on the cover of Scorpica you know superstar author Kate Quinn was kind enough to put her stamp of approval on the book, for which I will always be grateful. (The woman gives amaaaazing blurbs.) And this week, her list of recent recommendations appeared at BookBub, with Scorpica high on the list!

Kate Quinn interviews me about SCORPICA for CHIRB!

This was such a fun interview! As you probably know, for the past few years, Kate Quinn and I have both been writing historical fiction featuring extraordinary women. But did you know that before that, Kate wrote a fabulous series set in Ancient Rome? So I knew she’d be a great person to ask for a Scorpica blurb, and she was kind enough to give an absolutely smashing one.

Like the sword fight between Inigo and the Man in Black in The Princess Bride, our conversation ranged all over: from the similarities between historical fiction and epic fantasy (“it’s more like dog/wolf than dog/cat”), to the role of men in matriarchy, how we feel about fact-checking emails, and some of my latest reading recommendations.

GIRL IN DISGUISE makes an appearance at CrimeReads!

Just a little palate-cleanser here in case you’re tired of hearing about SCORPICA! This is the great thing about having multiple books out in the world — you never know which one’s going to pop up when or where.

Deanna Raybourn, who writes the fabulous Veronica Speedwell mystery series, recently put together a great list of her “favorite books featuring a question of identity,” and was kind enough to include GIRL IN DISGUISE. I’ve already told her I want the first part of this sentence on my tombstone.

Greer Macallister is always a great bet, but in Girl in Disguise she outdoes herself, fictionalizing the career of Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective.
