a #MonthOfMatriarchy manifesto!

I’ve been dropping a few hints here and there about November being the #MonthOfMatriarchy, so I figured I’d better have one central place where I actually talk about what that means. (Also, this isn’t one of those scary manifestos. It’s just laying out facts, beliefs, goals. Making it all manifest!)

Because:

  • In many obvious and many less obvious ways, we live in a male-default, patriarchal society

  • In speculative fiction we have the freedom to change all that, but we often don’t

  • It would be nice to talk about what that means and how we could change it, maybe just one month out of twelve?

So personally, I’ll be highlighting fictional works set in matriarchal societies — some I love, some not so much — throughout the month. But I encourage everyone to figure out what conversations YOU’D like to have around this. The world is big! The possibilities of fictional worlds even more so!

Let’s have a #MonthOfMatriarchy. You in?
