audio rights to THE ARCTIC FURY sold!

Great news for fellow audiobook fans! You’ll be able to listen to THE ARCTIC FURY in the near future. Details yet to come on timing, etc., but it’s awesome news — I absolutely love audiobooks and have been lucky enough to have all of my previous novels adapted for audio. This makes #4.

(When the time comes, by the way, don’t forget about libro.fm — it’s a way to buy audiobooks through your favorite independent bookstore. If you just can’t wait to hear a talented narrator whisper my words in your ear, you can pick up any of my previous books here.)

In addition to the cheerful snippets above, here’s one of my favorite reviews:

“Macallister follows up The Magician’s Lie with a novel of the power of sisterhood, shining a spotlight on the barbaric treatment of the mentally ill in this period as well as society’s view of women who don’t fit the ‘traditional’ mold. Readers will become engrossed in Charlotte’s journey of self-discovery as she fights to free herself and her sister from a rigged system.”– Library Journal (Editor’s Pick)

GIRL IN DISGUISE now available in Czech!

Publishing timelines are wacky creatures, and when I’m lucky enough to have foreign editions of my works produced, the release dates are often very different from the US release dates. Which can be really fun, because then it’s a pleasant surprise when a translated edition pops up! (Even if I can’t read it, which has been the case everywhere but the UK and Canada, ha.) It’s a thrill to share the cover of the Czech edition of GIRL IN DISGUISE, which just came out this week.

Mexican Gothic review up at CHIRB!

My latest review at the Chicago Review of Books just posted, and I’m thrilled to rave about Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s MEXICAN GOTHIC: “it delivers perfectly on the promise of its gorgeous cover, one of my favorites of the year. Like that cover, it’s alluring and foreboding, ambiguous and beautiful. And like its heroine Noemí, it’s ambitious, determined, and well worth getting to know.”

Also, let me add that this book has one of my favorite tie-ins ever: printable paper dolls of its glamorous 1950s Mexico City socialite heroine, Noemí Taboada! Check them out here.

THE ARCTIC FURY is on NetGalley!

Taking a deep breath…

it’s here!! Many of you have asked me to let you know when my next book was ready for reading and, well, here we go…

You can now request an electronic ARC of THE ARCTIC FURY on NetGalley.

(Physical ARCs have also landed, I’m told, so bloggers and booksellers can reach out to my publicist at Sourcebooks through the Contact page to request those. And I expect to hear soon whether it’s available on Edelweiss. As soon as I have some ARCs of my own, I also expect to be doing a giveaway or two or three.)

Happy reading! Copies will be hitting bookstores December 1.

interview with Alex George up at CHIRB!

Just a quick note to say that if you haven’t read Alex George’s THE PARIS HOURS yet, you should! And if you want to know more about this gorgeous historical novel — either before or after you read — you should definitely check out my interview with Alex over at the Chicago Review of Books!

“Set over the course of a single day, with plenty of detours into the fascinating backstories of its four main characters, The Paris Hours brims with beauty, music, tragedy, uncertainty, and hope.”

Historical Fiction Happy Hour!

I’ve been kind of blown away in the past couple of months by how bookstores and authors have quickly redefined events! It’s a bummer not to get to gather in person at our favorite bookstores, but on the other hand, virtual events have a clear upside — you can attend from basically anywhere. I’ve been lucky enough to participate in events large and small, and have booked virtual events as far out as August! Even once we can gather in person again, virtual events will have their place, and I love that books are still bringing people together, even in not-so-sunny times.

This Friday night, I’m getting together with three other historical fiction authors for Historical Fiction Happy Hour, and boy do we have some fun planned! Conversations, games, trivia, book giveaways, recipes for cocktails and mocktails — it’s going to be a hoot. All you have to do is register on Crowdcast, and then when the time comes, just click on in!

For more info and to register: Historical Fiction Happy Hour.

Hope to see you there!

#read99women: Aimee Agresti

And here we are, number 99! I started the #read99women series back in January as a way to celebrate the paperback release of WOMAN 99, and boy, could I not have foreseen just how many years long these few months would feel! Thank you for reading along with this fun little project. I’m working on an index-plus of all the books mentioned, but as you might imagine, it’s taking some time. Until then, stay tuned to the blog for other fun stuff, including news about my next book THE ARCTIC FURY, which comes out in trade paperback in December 2020. (Add it to your to-read shelf on Goodreads by clicking here!)

“Imagine Bridget Jones as a high-powered attorney in Singapore! Lauren Ho's sparkling, hilarious romantic comedy about a career woman searching for love and trying to have it all is an absolute charmer! I fell head over heels for Ho's heroine and this is one of those delicious books that I couldn't put down and didn't want to end! A frothy and fabulous pageturner full of laughs and warmth, this is exactly what we all need right now!”

#read99women: Linnea Hartsuyker

Number 98, believe it or not! Wow! Today’s guest, Linnea Hartsuyker, writes absorbing, adventure-packed historical novels that transport readers into a vividly drawn, unfamiliar world: the Viking Age of Exploration. Linnea and I will be two of four guests at a virtual Historical Fiction Happy Hour on Friday, May 29 — check out the details here!

Linnea Hartsuyker can trace her ancestry back to Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway, her inspiration for the trilogy consisting of THE HALF-DROWNED KING, THE SEA QUEEN, and THE GOLDEN WOLF. She grew up in the middle of the woods outside Ithaca, New York, and studied Engineering at Cornell University. After a decade of working at internet startups, and writing in her spare time, she attended NYU and received an MFA in Creative Writing. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband.

Linnea’s pick for #read99women: “Before fairy-tale-based novels became a fashionable sub-genre, in 1978, the heyday of second-wave feminism, Angela Carter wrote THE BLOODY CHAMBER, a collection of fairy tales, almost exclusively centering a woman's point of view. The prose is a delight, full of fantastical detail that creates beautiful pocket worlds for the reader to explore. No lover of fairy tales should pass this book by.”
